Thank you for your interest! You’re correct in that the main difference in price is due to the round-trip transportation service, which Desafio Adventure Company includes in their tour rate. (The reserve does not include transportation.) With our discount, the cost of the tour with transportation through Desafio Adventure Company is $59.50/adult, whereas the cost of the tour without transportation through the reserve is $45.00/adult. While it’s possible for visitors to drive themselves to/from the reserve, it isn’t possible to drive directly to the reserve’s entrance; they can only drive as far as the reserve’s official parking lot, where they’ll pay to park in the lot, and then catch the shuttle service to the reserve’s entrance. For this reason, some travelers prefer to get picked up at their hotel in the Monteverde or Santa Elena area and use the tour operator’s transportation to get to/from the reserve.
With respect to the tour experience itself (i.e., the walk), this is similar. Both tours can access the same trails, ecosystems, wildlife, etc. The reserve’s in-house tours are wildly popular, likely because many travelers assume they need to book direct through the reserve in order to explore the reserve, so it’s possible that they’re larger in size. Whether or not group size will impact your tour experience depends largely on the time of year you plan to visit. If you’ll be in the country during the low season, tour group size may be similar regardless of the tour operator you go with. During the high season, when the reserve and other attractions host hordes of visitors, smaller groups can be advantageous.

Of the other items you list, the only two that we currently have discounts for are the Monteverde Cloud Forest Tour and the Sloth Tour.

The Sloth Tour discount isn’t yet visible in our Discount Database, but we do have the discount if you decide you’d like to use it. The tour option is the one offered by Desafio Adventure Company; it includes round-trip transportation and originally costs $60/person but our discounted rate is $45/person.

Thanks so much for checking in about this! The discount we offer is for the tour to and from La Fortuna. You’re right, Desafio Adventure Company does offer a tour option with a pick-up in La Fortuna and a drop-off in San Jose, but the cost of that tour of theirs is more expensive, to account for the onward transportation to San Jose.
Because you’ve already been in contact with Desafio Adventure Company, the best course of action moving forward is for you to book the tour you decide to do (either a rafting tour or safari tour to/from La Fortuna, or a rafting tour or safari tour from La Fortuna to San Jose) through Desafio Adventure Company directly. I’d love to be able to help you with a discount here, but unfortunately, we aren’t able to accept discount order requests for tours for which there has been prior contact between travelers and tour operators. 🙁 (As per the Discount Disclaimer provided on each tour’s listing page on our website, “Pura Vida! eh? discounts cannot be applied to tours for which communication regarding the tours has already taken place between the traveler and the tour operator.”)

Yes, no problem! The popular Pacuare River Rafting Tour typically has participants every day, so your son could do the tour with others. Also to confirm, the tour operator can provide complimentary transportation to/from the Sleep Inn.
