I have several questions for a trip I am planning for June 2022. What hotel should we stay at if we are flying into the SJO airport (Tuesday) and want to be picked up the next morning (Wednesday) for this tour? We also want to be dropped off at Tabacon Thermal Resort in La Fortuna after the tour is over. Is that possible?
Last question – our daughter will be 12 just a few weeks after our trip to Costa Rica. Will they let her come with us (2 adults, 1 15 year old brother) on this tour?

Hello again Kara!
Absolutely! The Pacuare River Rafting Tour provider can provide transportation (either round-trip or a combination of two destinations) between San Jose, Alajuela, La Fortuna, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Cahuita, Limon, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and Siquirres. Transportation is complimentary provided you stay at a hotel (or hotels) within the tour operator’s normal pick-up/drop-off range, which is typically a town’s downtown center (hotels on the outskirts of towns typically don’t qualify for complimentary transportation).
In La Fortuna, Tabacon qualifies for the tour operator’s complimentary transportation, so a drop-off there is certainly possible. In Alajuela (where the SJO Airport is located), hotels in the city’s downtown core (such as Arenal Backpackers, Alajuela City Hotel & Guesthouse, etc.), the SJO Airport, and hotels across the street from the airport (e.g., the Holiday Inn and the Hampton Inn) qualify for the tour operator’s complimentary transportation, so a pick-up at hotels in these areas is possible. If you happen to choose a hotel outside of these areas (i.e., on the outskirts of downtown Alajuela), the pick-up is still possible but the tour operator will charge extra in this case.
Regarding the minimum age limit for the Pacuare River rafting tour, what’s most important are your daughter’s measurements, specifically her height and weight as these details will determine whether she’ll be able to safely fit one of the lifejackets that the tour operator has. Similar to our answer to your question about the Lost Canyon Canyoning Tour age limit (posted elsewhere in our forum), when the rafting tour is requested, you’ll likely be asked to provide your daughter’s measurements so the tour operator can have this information in advance. Even if you opt to request the tour now (i.e., nearly a year in advance), it would probably be best to wait until closer to your travel dates to provide the tour operator with the exact measurements, though, since they will likely change over the next year (these can be provided at a later date). What will likely happen in this case is that a request for the tour made now will be processed now (so you can obtain the discount) but will technically remain in “standby mode” until next year when the measurements can be confirmed.
Pura vida! 🙂
