Hi Nikki, just ran into a travel agent today who tried to badger me about not using a travel agent! 🤣🤣🤣. And she said, “If you’re flying out of Liberia, you better schedule your Covid Teat. Doesn’t matter that you’re vaccinated. And you need to bring proof of and $ amount of medical insurance to show that you won’t burden the Costa Rican medical system.” Any of that true? Flying into SJO 7/3. Flying out of Liberia 7/16. Thanks!

Hello Christopher!
Haha, go figure. 🤣
About your Covid-related questions, I’ll start with a disclaimer, though it pretty much goes without saying given the past year we’ve all experienced: Covid-related policies, restrictions, and requirements can change at any time. With this disclaimer in mind, instead of listing what the current requirements are (which may change between now and when you plan to visit), I’ll provide you with some helpful links where you can find up-to-date information. I’d recommend keeping an eye on these pages to see if anything changes between now and the day you leave home.
Costa Rica Entry Requirements: https://www.visitcostarica.com/en/costa-rica/planning-your-trip/entry-requirements
This website is run by Costa Rica’s tourism board, so it targets international visitors. It has an entire section dedicated to Covid-related entry requirements. It also provides links to the following two resources:The Costa Rica Health Pass: https://salud.go.cr/
To date, this document is required to be completed no sooner than 72 hours prior to you entering Costa Rica.US Entry Requirements (for return travel from Costa Rica): https://www.ict.go.cr/es/documentos-institucionales/material-de-apoyo-coronavirus/pruebas-covid-para-usa/1886-faq-requirements-for-travel-to-eeuu/file.html
This document is a compilation of requirements for travel back to the US (assuming you’re American). In addition, the website for the US Embassy in Costa Rica (https://cr.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/), as well as Costa Rica’s page on the CDC’s website (https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/covid-4/coronavirus-costa-rica), has helpful information but it’s similar to what you’ll find in the aforementioned document.
As you’ll learn by browsing the information that’s available in these resources, the US requires you to get a Covid test in Costa Rica before you return home (even if you’ve been vaccinated), and Costa Rica does require you to purchase special insurance, so, unfortunately, the travel agent was right. Links to where you can get tested and purchase insurance are provided in the resources linked to above. 🙂
