Tour operator’s description: Turn your day of travel into a fun filled adventure full of three of Costa Rica’s most beautiful sites. Take an exciting day trip during your stay in San Jose. Enjoy an interesting tour at a famous coffee plantation where you will learn about the history and importance of coffee in Costa Rican culture. Head to the Poas Volcano where you will get to see gorgeous Costa Rican views and the massive crater filled with a bright blue sulfurous lake. Finish the day by hiking to the breathtaking La Paz waterfall where lots of birds, butterflies, monkeys, and sloths have been spotted. Have a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch. First, we’ll drive up the mountains towards the Poas Volcano. You’ll notice a change in altitude as the temperature gets cooler and the type of vegetation changes – there are a lot of coffee, flower, fern and strawberry plantations higher in the mountains. On the way to the volcano, we’ll visit a Coffee Plantation and learn about the ancient techniques of planting, harvesting and processing coffee, as well as the importance of coffee production in Costa Rica. We’ll finish the tour off with a delicious cup of coffee before continuing to the Poas volcano. When we reach the top of the volcano, you’ll be amazed at the gorgeous mountain views, the interesting rock formations and the massive crater filled with a stunning light blue sulfurous pool. The Poas Volcano has been active since 2006, mostly with gas or ash eruptions instead of red lava flow. In fact, on October 8, 2014, ash was tossed over 1,000-ft high up into the air. You’ll also have a chance to learn about the different ecosystems and wildlife in the Poas National Park. After our visit to the Poas Volcano, we’ll continue on our adventure to the La Paz Gardens Nature Park for a delicious lunch and tour. We’ll sit in the La Paz gardens and enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch, and then head on a tour to see the breathtaking La Paz waterfall. We will also have a chance to visit a number of attractions inside the park such as the hummingbird gallery, the serpentarium, the bird house, the butterfly garden and the frog exhibit!

  • Many websites indicating that Poas Volcano is closed due to volcanic activities. But there are others left comments of visiting the volcano just recently. Do you know if the volcano is open?

    • Josie –

Great question! As of today’s date (as far as we know), Poas remains closed. As for the travellers’ comments that you note, perhaps they were commenting on past trips/visits, but only got around to posting about their experiences recently? I am not sure…

I did double-check with the tour operator who runs the above-mentioned tour, and they are still not running the Poas Volcano portion of the tour due to the closure. For the time being, when travellers opt to take the Poas Volcano / La Paz Waterfall / Doka Estate Coffee Tour combo tour option described above but en route between San Jose and La Fortuna, in lieu of the Poas Volcano visit travellers receive a tour/hike around the Peninsula in Arenal (which provides views of the Arenal Volcano and Lake). Alternatively, travellers who opt to take the above combo tour to and from the San Jose region receive a discounted tour rate in lieu of the missed Poas Volcano activity.

      Pura vida! 🙂
