Tour operator’s description: This Combo Tour will allow you to see three important sites in one day! Start your day as you hike across the Arenal Hanging Bridges and see the jungle from high above the forest floor. Then, visit the massive and breathtaking La Fortuna waterfall before enjoying a traditional Costa Rican lunch. Finish the day off the a chance to see amazing views of the Arenal volcano, on a leisurely walk through the National Park! The Arenal Hanging Bridges are a beautiful, environmentally friendly project located near the Arenal Volcano. The trails span a total of 2 miles, allowing you to see the rainforest from a bird’s perspective! Your naturalist guide will teach you about Costa Rican culture, history, and nature, while pointing out different species of plants, animals and birds along the way. These trails bring you as close as you’d ever hope to see the rainforest and its inhabitants, as well as give you access to see stunning views of the rainforest and mountains that are miles away. After your adventure on the hanging bridges, you will head to the La Fortuna Waterfall! When you reach the entrance, you will have time to change into your bathing suit in case you want to cool off under the waterfall. This is sure to be a good workout as there are 300 steps to get to the down to the waterfall, and 300 to get back up! When you reach the bottom, you’ll have an opportunity to take lots of pictures and swim in the cool waters of one of the largest and most breathtaking waterfalls in Arenal! Next, you will head to a local restaurant where you will get to try a delicious Costa Rican casado, a typical Costa Rican meal. This is the perfect way to relax and refuel before heading on your next hike to the Arenal Volcano National Park! This National Park is one of the most visited parks in all of Central America. The trails are generally flat and not very strenuous — perfect for a leisurely and informative hike with one of our naturalist guides! We’ll head through the jungle, hiking through well-groomed, easy trails that skirt the base of the Arenal Volcano. Your eagle- eyed naturalist guide will point out different species of flora and fauna and teach you about Costa Rica’s nature, culture and history, including information about the volcanic explosion of 1968! This area was devastated by the lava flow and has since re-grown into a lush forest with great biodiversity. When you reach both of the observation platforms you will see magnificent views of the impressive Arenal Volcano, the pristine Lake Arenal and the extinct volcano Cerro Chato! If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to hear or see gas and ash eruptions come out of the top of behemoth Arenal Volcano. This is the closest you can get to the base of the Arenal Volcano and the perfect vantage point to take remarkable photos as the sun sets! Then it’s time to head to the Los Lagos Hot Springs. Enjoy more than 10 different volcanic hot  pools, swim-up bars, free lockers, restaurant and access to their butterfly garden and crocodile pond, with friendly, personalized service at this Arenal hot springs location. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner at the resort resturant.

  • Hello, i’m currently planning a trip to Costa Rica in a few weeks and i would love to do the hanging bridges, to visit the park (especially the waterfalls) and the hot springs would be an extra. I was wondering it it’d be better for me to pay the different entrance fees for each activities without a guide or transportation, as all areas seems to be close to each other (walking from hanging bridges to national park entrance i.e.?); i wouldn’t mind going to the hot springs on a seperate day if it allows me more time to enjoy the walk around the park (i plan to spend 3 days in the area of La Fortuna).

Do you think it is still worth to pay for an all-inclusive, 1-day tour in my situation?

    • Alex –

That is a tough question to answer! 😉 Whether or not it would be “better” for you to pay the different entrance fees for each activity without a guide or transportation will depend on a number of factors, such as whether “would be better” should equate to “would be less expensive” or “would be a higher quality experience”. We are firm believers in using local and knowledgeable tour guides to increase travel experience, however non-guided (i.e., self-guided) tour experiences are the less expensive option. To help you decide whether or not you should plan to explore Costa Rica with or without activity tour guides, we recommend reading our related blog post: Guided Tours In Costa Rica: Are They Necessary, Valuable, And/Or Worthwhile?

For the distance between each activity, this is much greater than you might think. For example, the distance between the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park and the Arenal Volcano National Park is an approximate 15-20 minute drive and is not within walking distance. With the Arenal Combo Tour (the option that includes the volcano tour run through the Arenal Volcano National Park), this starts with a tour of the hanging bridges (an approximate 25-minute drive from downtown La Fortuna), followed by a tour of the La Fortuna Waterfall (an approximate 25-30 minute drive from the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park), a volcano tour (an approximate 25-minute drive from the La Fortuna Waterfall), ending with an evening at the hot springs (the drive time here would depend which exact hot springs attraction was chosen with the combo tour). Conveniently, in addition to providing a guided tour of the hanging bridges, waterfall, and volcano–plus an evening spent at the hot springs–the combo tour includes entrance fees to all four attractions, transportation to/from each, lunch, and dinner.

To be honest, it is 100% possible to plan to participate in each activity individually in the event that you would prefer to spread out the activities over a few days (you could also opt to participate in the Arenal Combo Tour without hot springs, allowing you to purchase a hot springs pass for a separate day if you would prefer). To save time and likely cost (especially if you opt for guided tours of the various attractions), we would recommend the 1-day combo tour option.

      Pura vida! 🙂

  • How many people are on a typical tour? There will be four of us wanting to participate. Will another 15 or 20 people be part of the tour group

    • Stevie Shipley –

Thank you for your inquiry! For this particular tour (the combo tour described above), the tour operator operates with a limit of 10 travellers per guide. Depending on time of year you plan to travel (and how busy the season may be at that time), there may be more than 10 people participating in the tour, however for the purpose of providing a high quality tour experience for every participant, the tour operator aims to keep the ratio of guide-to-traveller low.

      Pura vida! 🙂
